The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.Everything to Know About the ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Starring Young President Snow

Adapted from Collins’ prequel novel of the same name, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to follow the book’s plot. Snow is tasked with mentoring a Games contestant much like Haymitch does for Katniss and Peeta years later.

The book — and its film adaptation — focus on a younger version of Snow long before he becomes the president of the dystopian-era country. Casting has yet to be announced.

Lionsgate confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter in April 2020 that a movie adaptation was already in the works, one month before the novel was even published.

Francis Lawrence, who helmed both parts of Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Hunger Games: Mockingjay, will be back as the director for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

The studio revealed at CinemaCon in May 2022 that the upcoming film will hit theaters on November 23, 2023.

In May 2022, it was confirmed that Rachel Zegler will star in the prequel series.

While the full-length trailer has yet to be released, a teaser was revealed at the 2022 MTV Movie and TV Awards in June 2022.

The two-minute video features a songbird and a snake breaking through ice preparing to launch into an attack. The teaser both reintroduces the concept of the Hunger Games while also warning viewers they will discover “who is a songbird and who is a snake” when the film premieres in November 2023.

Deadline revealed the first round of tribute and mentor characters for the prequel on June 14, 2022.

Knox Gibson will play Bobbin, a tribute from District 8, while Jerome Lance will portray Marcus, the tribute from District 2. Mackenzie Lansing will play Coral, a tribute from District 4. For the newest mentors, Agmer Husain will portray Felix Ravinstill, a mentor from District 11. Ashley Liao, for her part, will also be a mentor from District 11, in the role of Clemensia Dovecote, one of Blyth’s closest friends.

In June 2022, West Side Story star — and Zegler's real-life boyfriend — Josh Andrés Rivera was added to the citizens of Panem. "Loyalties will be tested," the official Hunger Games Instagram teased about Rivera's role as Sejanus Plinth, a former tribute from District 2 who was once a close friend of Snow.

Lionsgate announced in a June 2022 statement that Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer would join the anticipated sequel, playing Coriolanus Snow’s cousin and confidant. In the book series, Tigris has an integral role in advising the future Panem president on his moral quandaries.

Tigris, a renowned Capitol stylist, was previously played by Eugenie Bondurant in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 2.

Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman, who emcees the 10th Games in the prequel, will be brought to life by Jason Schwartzman, according to a July 2022 Deadline report.

Schwartzman’s character is also an ancestor of Caesar Flickerman, who was portrayed by Stanley Tucci in the original films.
